The flight to Moscow was very long but I was glad I got to travel with my teammates Will, Dennis, and Eli. Our hotel was far away from the air port which allowed us to see a little bit more of Moscow. Our hotel was by a park and a lot of interesting places. We went for a jog around and were able to see some different things which was fun even though we definitely stood out. We were in Moscow a few days before the competition which was good to try and adjust better to the time change.

The semifinals started out with fencing and I ended up doing very well considering fencing is my weakest event. I had one of my highest scores in fencing at an international competition! Swimming went well and I was only 2 seconds off my best time. Going into the combined I was in 31st place and less than 1 min 30 seconds behind first place. The group was very close in points and the course was very tight with sharp turns. I shot very well in the first two rounds at 10 seconds and 11 seconds; my third round wasn't as good and was 27 seconds which hurt me a little and I was only able to make up one place and finished in 30th place. I did not make finals but my teammates Sam and Margaux qualified. Even though I did not make finals, my coach was still very happy with my performance since this was my first year at senior worlds and that my fencing score was better.

While in Moscow some of my teammates and I along with some of the pentathletes from Canada took the metro into the city to see Red Square. Taking the metro was definitely an adventure since the Russian alphabet is much different from ours. To the side is a picture of what McDonalds looks like in Russian. At Red Square I got to see Lenin's tomb, St. Basil's Cathedrel, see picture above, as well as some other cathedrals. The food is always interesting when you go to another country and we definitely had some good food. Some stuff I was a little unsure about but I always like to try things to experience the culture a little more. I was very intrigued by the language and the alphabet and I would like to learn more about it in the future and for other competitions I may have in Russia. On the way back Dennis and Eli upgraded Will and I to business class which made the 8 hour plane ride much nicer! I'm glad to be back and begin training for Junior Worlds in November.
